Celebrating girls’ leadership and initiative

Thank you for page 9 of your October issue, with the stories about the 10-year-old journalist launching a newspaper for her neighbourhood (“Sharing the news in Hackett’s Cove”) and the pair of 16-year-olds seeing a gap for shucking oysters at events and creating a business to address that gap (“Ah, shucks: Teen
entrepreneurs shucking their way to success”).
Seeing those stories above the lovely image and information about October 11 being the International Day of the Girl Child was a sensitive decision on your newspaper’s part and made for an inspiring page.
As a retired teacher and the mother and grandmother of girls, I know it is important for us to recognize that we have not yet achieved equality between women and men—and addressing this starts when they are girls and boys.
How heartening to read about girls in our area who are showing leadership and initiative and being
celebrated in our community newspaper for doing so. Please keep sharing such stories.
